On Tuesday, authorities in Gansu province released an investigation and assessment report into the "Aug 7" mountain flood disaster in Yuzhong county, according to Xinhua News Agency.

The report found that extreme short-duration heavy rainfall between Aug 7 and 8, 2025, in the Xinglong River and Kangu River basins triggered sudden mountain floods, leaving 32 people dead, 19 missing, and 15 injured.

The disaster was characterized as a compound chain event involving mountain floods, landslides, and debris flows, the report said. Investigators concluded that the intense rainfall was the direct cause of the disaster, while the region's complex terrain significantly amplified its impact. Large-scale landslides occurred in gully head areas, subsequently forming flash floods and debris flows in both river basins. After being diverted by terrain, the torrents burst through channels and embankments, destroying multiple villages.

Following the disaster, local authorities launched a full-scale rescue and reconstruction. After an intensive campaign lasting roughly 100 days, all 325 affected households, totaling 1,195 people, had moved into new homes by the end of 2025.
