Global experts seek to partner China in developing embodied intelligence

Global experts gathered in Beijing recently to discuss the broad applications of embodied intelligence, expressing hope for long-term and in-depth cooperation with China to promote rapid development.

"Embodied intelligence refers to systems like robots that combine artificial intelligence with a physical body to engage in sensory interaction with the real world. They integrate bodily senses into the environment, focusing on learning and physical interaction," said Said Harith Said Al-Rawahi, chair of innovation and intellectual property at Oman College of Health Science in Muscat, Oman.

He noted that the goal of developing embodied intelligence is to enhance adaptive, interactive physical capabilities to assist humans, highlighting China's progress and competitive advantages in this field.

He pointed out that Oman has recognized the potential of embodied intelligence, particularly in healthcare and logistics. Oman has strong foundations and is eager to cooperate with China and Western countries, given its favorable government policies, developing academic research infrastructure, and accelerating private sector entrepreneurship.

Al-Rawahi made the remarks at the conference in Beijing, themed "Embodied Intelligence: The Integration of AI and Robots", a parallel forum of the 2025 World Science and Technology Development Forum, held during the China Association for Science and Technology's first international month.

Jacques Eone, president of the Cameroon Robotics Association, echoed Al-Rawahi's views, emphasizing the importance of robotics development in Cameroon and calling for international cooperation.

"We want to make sure that in the context of Africa, where people sometimes struggle with access to drugs and resources, we are not replaced but rather collaborate in key areas like embodied AI," Eone said.

Eone highlighted ongoing international cooperation in research programs and robotics education in agriculture, logistics, and the environment, noting their significant importance to the country.

"We are very happy to be able to have a good partnership with countries like China, and we are open to the world," he said, adding that future robots should be adaptable to all ecosystems, making Africa a promising testing ground for robotics.

Chee Fai Tan, an academician of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology and president of the ASEAN Federation of Smart Industry, said embodied intelligence can advance China-ASEAN cooperation for the next frontiers of innovation.

He said the two sides are at a pivotal moment of development. With China's national development plan during the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030) emphasizing self-reliance, AI Plus, and embodied intelligence, ASEAN has a unique opportunity to position itself as a partner with China.
