Hu Youtao, a former senior political adviser in Jiangxi province, has been prosecuted on charges of taking bribes, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said on Saturday.

The case of Hu, former vice-chairman of the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was investigated by the National Commission of Supervision before being transferred to procuratorial authorities for review and prosecution.

The SPP approved Hu's arrest and designated the People's Procuratorate of Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, to handle the case. The Wenzhou procuratorate recently filed a public prosecution against Hu with the Wenzhou Intermediate People's Court.

During the review and prosecution stage, prosecutors informed Hu of his legal rights, questioned him and listened to the opinions of his defense counsel.

According to the indictment, Hu took advantage of his former positions, including deputy director of the former Jiangxi provincial development planning commission, Party chief and director of the Jiangxi Provincial Finance Department, Party chief of the former Jiangxi provincial local taxation bureau, vice-governor of Jiangxi province and vice-chairman of the CPPCC Jiangxi Provincial Committee, to seek benefits for others. In return, he illegally accepted money and valuables.

Prosecutors said the amount involved was especially large and that Hu should be held criminally responsible for bribery.

Hu, 71, is a native of Jiangxi. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1986 and long worked in Jiangxi. He served as director of the provincial finance department in 2003, vice-chairman of the CPPCC Jiangxi Provincial Committee in 2010, vice-governor of Jiangxi province in 2012, and again as vice-chairman of the provincial CPPCC committee in 2015 until his retirement in 2018.

Hu was investigated in 2025.
