Beijing eyes unity, cooperation as chair of UN Security Council
As China assumes the rotating monthly chair of the United Nations Security Council on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing will work to strengthen unity and cooperation within the Security Council, uphold fairness and openness, focus on practical actions, and promote political settlements.
"We also expect the international community to support China in fulfilling its duties, to cooperate with the Security Council in advancing the tasks on the agenda for May, to jointly practice genuine multilateralism, and to make greater contributions to the cause of peace and development," Lin said in Beijing on Thursday.
Currently, the international landscape is marked by intertwined changes and turmoil, with geopolitical conflicts erupting one after another, the spokesman noted.
"The Security Council bears the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, and its role is closely watched," he said.
China attaches great importance to its role as rotating chair and will, with a responsible and constructive attitude, earnestly fulfill the duties conferred by the UN Charter, Lin added.
