Virdika Rizky Utama, executive director of PARA Syndicate, said in a recent interview with China Daily that in many political systems, success is often judged by visible, short-term results, but such gains do not always translate into lasting value.

He noted that China has emphasized "a correct understanding of what it means to perform well", shifting the focus to tangible improvements in people's lives and long-term outcomes.

Citing China's targeted poverty alleviation campaign, Utama said effective governance should address concrete needs such as education, healthcare and employment, while recognizing that less visible factors — such as strong institutions and social trust — are essential for sustainable development.

He added that many developing countries face similar challenges, stressing that "what truly matters is not what dazzles for a moment, but what continues to endure."
