A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, with a focal depth of 66 kilometers. A tsunami warning has been issued, but no impact is expected on China's coastal areas.

At 3:53 pm Beijing Time on Monday, a quake hit waters off the east coast of Japan's Honshu island, with the epicenter located at 39.94 degrees north latitude and 143.13 degrees east longitude. The tremor was noticeably felt in Tokyo.

Based on preliminary seismic parameters, China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center said the earthquake may trigger a local tsunami around the epicenter, but it will not affect China's coastal areas.

The Japan meteorological agency reported that the maximum seismic intensity reached "Upper 5" — the fourth strongest on Japan's 10-level intensity scale — where unsecured furniture may fall and people may find it difficult to walk without support.

A tsunami warning has been issued by the Japan meteorological agency.

No casualties have been reported so far.
