Monitors at the Qilihai Wetland in Tianjin's Ninghe district have recorded 308 bird species so far this year, 50 more than in 2021, according to local authorities.

More than 3,000 Eurasian spoonbills passed through the reserve this autumn, twice the usual number. Rare species, including the Oriental white stork and black-winged stilt, also gathered in unusually large flocks. It is predicted that the number of migratory birds stopping at the Qilihai Wetland this year will exceed 600,000.

Crisscrossed by waterways and dense reed beds, the wetland is a vital stopover for birds on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. It is home to 183 species of wild plants and 47 species of wild fish, which provide abundant food for birds.
