BEIJING - China's General Administration of Customs said on Thursday that it seized more than 4,500 items in a campaign to clamp down on copyright infringements and counterfeiting over the six-month period that ended in March.

The items involved were worth 110 million yuan ($16.9 million), it said. The campaign started in October of last year.

Chinese authorities shut down 410 websites involved in copyright infringements and counterfeiting in the first three months of 2011 in an intensified effort to clamp down on online cheating, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Thursday.

China had investigated 496 cases of copyright infringements and production and sales of counterfeits by the end of March, which involved more than 700 million yuan ($107.7 million), the ministry said in a statement on its website.

A total of 355 suspects were arrested in the crackdown, it said.
