UNITED NATIONS: The eighth contingent of Chinese riot police is scheduled to leave Haiti for home on Saturday after they successfully carried out their assignments as UN peacekeepers in the Caribbean island country, a diplomat from the Chinese Mission to the United Nations told Xinhua late on Thursday.

The Chinese riot police squad, which is made up of 125 police officers, arrived in Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, on a peacekeeping mission for the United Nations on June 13, 2009.

Also on Thursday, Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, called Hu Yunwang, the political commissar of the Chinese anti-riot police team in Haiti, and told him that the United Nations and the Haitian government sang highly of their performance over the past 10 months.

In Haiti, the Chinese police squad supported the international peacekeeping presence and local police to maintain law and order, deal with mass public security emergencies, serve as guards on important public occasions and organize and train local riot police.
