One of the 2026 Shanghai International Flower Show's most talked-about attractions will remain on display for at least three more months after the event ended on May 10.

A giant West Highland white terrier-shaped topiary at Suhewan Central Green Space in Jing'an district has become one of Shanghai's most photographed springtime attractions. Nicknamed the "scruffy puppy", the 5.2-meter-tall sculpture quickly went viral across social media platforms for its fluffy, slightly messy appearance, drawing long lines of visitors eager to take photos.

Many visitors found its unpolished look memorable. Unlike traditional floral displays that often emphasize neatness and symmetry, the canine's uneven "fur" and relaxed expression gave it a casual and approachable charm. On social media, some office workers jokingly compared the terrier's slightly tired look to their own after a long day at work.

Online discussions soon expanded from photo-sharing to calls for extending the installation, naming the dog, and developing related merchandise. Its popularity also boosted traffic in the surrounding commercial area.

During the first 18 days of the flower show, Suhewan MixC World, located next to the installation site, received 1.70 million visits, up 192.53 percent year-on-year, and generated 61.57 million yuan ($9.06 million) in consumer spending, up 49.22 percent year-on-year.

The strong public response helped secure an extension of the display period. The "scruffy puppy" will remain at Suhewan for at least three more months. To adapt to summer weather, the sculpture is expected to undergo maintenance and plant replacement in late May or June, including adjustments to its "fur" and overall shape.

The story also reflects the broader approach behind this year's flower show. In recent years, the event has expanded from a park-based exhibition into a citywide celebration connecting waterfront spaces, shopping districts, public parks, and neighborhood communities.

Rather than limiting displays to enclosed exhibition areas, organizers have placed installations in everyday urban spaces, allowing residents and visitors to encounter them while walking, shopping, or spending time outdoors.
