Shanghai posts strong holiday retail growth, up 7.7%
Shanghai reported steady growth in online consumption and physical-store spending, growing 7.7 percent year-on-year to reach 64.3 billion yuan ($9.44 billion) in total during the five-day May Day holiday, according to official data.
Boosted by more than 300 daily activities tailored to target consumers across the city, consumers spent 36.95 billion yuan in physical stores during the holiday period, a year-on-year increase of 7.9 percent, data from the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai) showed.
Spending in the city's 19 major business districts amounted to 4.39 billion yuan, recording a year-on-year growth of 9.6 percent. Meanwhile, online spending rose 7.4 percent year-on-year to 27.35 billion yuan, the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai) added.
Trade-in measures have shored up sales revenue of subsidized products including home appliances and digital and smart products to reach 570 million yuan during the holiday, an increase of 154 percent in comparison with that of the pre-holiday period, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.
In inbound consumption, the amount of departure tax refund transactions surged 248.6 percent year-on-year, and the revenue generated increased by 44 percent from that of a year ago.
