That philosophy was immediately clear on opening night. Norwegian innovator Bugge Wesseltoft shared the stage with Grammy-winning drummer Steve Smith, Chinese trumpeter Li Xiaochuan and tenor Cai Chengyu. Under the baton of conductor Li Biao, alongside the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra and China NCPA Chorus, the performance moved seamlessly between Eastern and Western traditions.
"You'll hear strong melodies, earthy rhythms, unexpected twists and turns, all performed by virtuosic musicians," says drummer Steve Smith in a short video.
Cross-cultural dialogue remains central throughout the festival. As part of the China-Brazil Cultural Year, Brazilian artists including vocalist Luedji Luna and trombonist Josiel Konrad are collaborating with Chinese musicians, creating moments that feel less like fusion and more like shared language.
Artists like Grammy-nominated pianist Kenny Barron and keyboardist Jeff Lorber have also brought their own unique innovations, blending tradition with experimentation.
"Jazz has always been my lifelong language. Improvisation, soul and freedom to speak through melody — it's about connecting with people in the moment, which is timeless," says Lorber.
