With the May Day holiday approaching, a total of 18 films are gearing up to compete during the five-day break — a lucrative box-office period expected to help revive the sluggish market.

At a recent promotional event held at the China National Film Museum, the holiday lineup was unveiled, featuring a wide range of genres from comedy to documentary and animation.

For audiences who favor realistic storytelling, several titles stand out. These include the biopic Wan Tongshu, which follows a dedicated Chinese musicologist who devoted his life to preserving the traditional art of muqam (a musical performance) in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region; Blood-Spattered Cliff, which recounts a Red Army unit's heroic sacrifice in Guizhou province in 1934; and Missions to the Moon Part One, a documentary revealing lesser-known stories behind the Chang'e 6 mission in 2024, which successfully completed the world's first collection of a sample from the far side of the moon.

Multiple foreign films such as The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition are also highlights in the May Day holiday lineup. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

For those looking to unwind, cinemas also provide an escape from workplace stress. Three films focusing on family bonds and romantic relationships offer emotional resonance. Among them is director Wu Yang's If I Were You, which uses a light comedic tone to explore emotional dilemmas in marriage.

Other upcoming titles include Dear You, a tearjerker that follows an elderly woman's half-century-long hidden love in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong province; and No One Is Closer Than We, which tells the story of a man struggling to cover his girlfriend's medical expenses after she loses her two front teeth in a motorcycle accident.

Foreign films also account for a notable share of the lineup. Hollywood fans can look forward to The Devil Wears Prada 2, the sequel to the 2006 classic reuniting Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway; the martial arts fantasy Mortal Kombat 2; and Michael, a biopic about the late pop icon Michael Jackson. Other international titles include the award-winning Sudanese drama Goodbye Julia and the documentary Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition.
