Xiapu county in Fujian province, one of China's major kelp production areas, has entered its peak harvesting season. Across Xiahu town and Shajiang town of the county, freshly harvested kelp, either suspended on sun-facing hillsides or laid out to dry between rows of bamboo poles over the sea, adorns coastal landscapes, forming a unique scene of harvest. In 2025, the kelp cultivation area in Xiapu reached approximately 6,613 hectares, yielding 169,000 tonnes of product with an estimated output value of 1.84 billion yuan (about $269 million).
