Ningxia students continue 31-year tradition with 54-km trek to honor martyrs
The route echoes historical events. In 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army launched a campaign in the Renshanhe area, the first battle in the liberation of Ningxia. Today, more than 300 martyrs are buried at the cemetery.
Upon arrival, participants paid tribute by observing moments of silence, presenting flower baskets, and cleaning the gravestones.
"The hardest part was climbing Huangmao Mountain," said Zhao Rongyan, a head teacher at Guyuan No 2 Middle School. "Many students were exhausted, but they supported one another. Some who are usually playful in class showed remarkable responsibility, helping classmates carry bags or pushing them uphill. It was deeply moving to see their character revealed on the journey."
Students said the experience reshaped their understanding of hardship and sacrifice.
