The United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) Youth Leaders China Tour officially kicked off at the Nanjing University Suzhou Campus on March 24.

The event combined a launch ceremony with a China-foreign youth dialogue session, featuring speeches by representatives and a performance of a scene from Kunqu Opera classic The Peony Pavilion by Nanjing University students.

"The Asia-Pacific region, home to diverse civilizations, is one of the most dynamic and promising regions in the world," said Tan Tieniu, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Party chief of Nanjing University. "Today's gathering at the vibrant Suzhou campus marks a meaningful starting point for experiencing China, exchanging ideas, and building lasting friendships."

Yang Wanming, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), said young people are the future and a driving force for peace and development. He added that the program aims to promote exchange, mutual learning, and cooperation among Asia-Pacific cities through youth engagement.

Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, secretary-general of UCLG ASPAC, described the tour as a journey not only across cities and campuses, but also across ideas, cultures, and perspectives. "Through the UCLG ASPAC Young Leaders initiative, we seek to empower the next generation to connect across cultures, learn from one another, and become catalysts for innovation in their communities," she said.

Arjan Shrestha, senior financial officer of Nepal's Neelakantha municipality, shared his enthusiasm: "We're excited to see China's achievements in green development, innovation, and enterprise development firsthand."

"I truly appreciate the guiding role of UCLG ASPAC in empowering youth to contribute to sustainable development and socio-economic transformation," he added.

Hosted by CPAFFC and UCLG ASPAC, the program brings together youth leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region for a visit to Suzhou, Wuxi, and Yancheng in Jiangsu province from March 23 to 28. Participants will explore the region's cutting-edge innovation, scenic landscapes, and rich intangible cultural heritage.
