MADRID -- At least two people were confirmed dead and six others seriously injured after two high-speed trains derailed in southern Spain on Sunday evening.

The accident occurred around 20:00 local time (1900 GMT) near the town of Amaduz in the province of Cordoba, when a Malaga-Madrid train left the tracks and struck another train travelling in the opposite direction, causing both to derail.

Spain's railway infrastructure operator Adif said in a post on social media platform X that the first train derailed while entering the track area, spilling onto an adjacent line and hitting the oncoming train.

Emergency services in the Andalusia region confirmed the accident, adding that all services between the region and Madrid had been suspended and that ambulances were sent to the scene.

A reporter from Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, who was aboard the Malaga-Madrid train, said two carriages tipped onto their side and the windows were shattered.

Rescue operations are still ongoing, and the number of casualties may change.
