Rainforest-themed activities launched in Hainan
A series of rainforest-themed activities recently launched in Wangxia village of Changjiang Li autonomous county, Hainan province, to celebrate green living and conservation.
The event features 23 activities across public welfare, education, competitions, and academic programs. It will continue through December.
The opening ceremony, themed "Dreaming Rainforest", was a live performance integrated into the natural landscape. It showcased the tropical rainforest's biodiversity and the daily life of the Li ethnic people. The dance Echoes of the Apes, inspired by the Hainan gibbon, highlighted conservation efforts that have increased the species' population to seven groups totaling 42 individuals. The performance followed a minimal intervention principle out of respect for the environment by using eco-friendly materials and a reversible stage design.
On Sunday, the Olympic Champion public sports experience event was held along the Tropical Rainforest National Park Tourist Highway. Olympic champions Zhang Hui (short track speed skating), Yang Xiuli (judo), and Guo Weiyang (gymnastics) volunteered as national park ambassadors and joined roughly 1,000 participants on a 10-kilometer walk.
Also on Sunday, the Hainan Province "Changjiang Cup" Ten-Mile Gallery Rock Climbing Competition began. About 60 climbers from across the country competed in youth, men's, and women's categories on the area's imposing rock walls, demonstrating the integration of sports and tourism.
Academic exchanges included the 2025 International Symposium on Tropical Rainforest National Park, held from Sunday to Monday. The symposium recognized achievements in Hainan gibbon protection and ecosystem service improvement. Experts shared insights on forest resource management, national park practices, and climate change.
