Zhang Xueyun, an employee at the Daquan Management Station of the Lingwu Baijitan National Nature Reserve Administration, demonstrated how to lay these straw grids: "First, spread wheat straw evenly on the sand, then use a shovel to press the straw about 15-20 cm deep into the sand. Push sand toward the base of the straw to secure it firmly in place, and it's done."
Shortly after the demonstration, some members of the press tried the method for themselves.
The program also took the reporters to the Ningxia Water Museum, which traces more than 2,000 years of irrigation along the Yellow River, and on a boat trip through the Yellow River Grand Canyon's Ten-Mile Gorge to see the region's economic and water-management progress firsthand.
